Shawnee Middle School Bands

Thank you for your interest in joining the SMS Beginning Band! Students start band in 6th grade in like-instrument classes where they learn how to play the Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone or Percussion instruments. Students choose what instrument they want to play (with director help and guidance) at the beginning of the school year. If you have questions about the different instruments, or want to learn more about them, there are videos below that highlight each instrument. Also are video links to parent and student testimonials about band. Band students are able to participate in many other activities both inside and outside the school: many students are involved in sports, choir, drama, art, youth groups, dance, gymnastics and scouting. We work with and encourage our students to be active in as many programs as they would like so they can be more well-rounded. 6th grade students perform two concerts, one in November and another in April.

Because of the school schedule, 6th grade is the only entry point for band, students cannot start band in 7th or 8th grade unless they are transferring from another school band program. The directors will also work with parents to help them get an instrument and supplies for their child. Please email Mr. Baldwin at shabaldwin@shawnee.k12.ok.us if you have any questions, and we look forward to having your child in the Shawnee Bands!

Shawnee Middle School bands are comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band students housed at the Shawnee Middle School. These 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands focus on fundamental band repertoire geared towards the young musician. All middle school band students perform concerts throughout the year while the 7th grade and 8th grade students also have the option to participate in the ECOBDA Honor bands and Solo/Ensemble Contests.
